Unsafe at any speed - AVOID!! Nov 07, 2009
By NCTejana As I type, I'm suffering the discomfort of a cellulitis facial infection in reaction to this product. It's not a question of cross-contamination, as the CraftyDab face crayons I used were a freshly opened package untouched by anyone else and my hands were clean. The first couple of days of discomfort led me to search online about allergies and face paint, at which point I discovered a newly reported study showing that many of these hobby-shop face paints (INCLUDING THIS BRAND) are contaminated with toxins such as lead and common allergens such as nickel, making me very sorry I'd talked my husband into painting his face, too -- he's horribly allergic to that metal, but luckily the moment he started feeling signs of allergy, he removed the makeup. I'm less lucky, as I wore it the whole evening without feeling anything and now have painful tender spots along the left-hand side of my face, swollen lymph glands, a $75 prescription of heavy antibiotics, and the doctor bill for today's visit and next week's follow-up. STAY AWAY, folks!
(The report cited can be found by searching "A Report on Heavy Metals in Face Paints" online. It is a scientific report whose science was reviewed by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of California, among others.)
Toxins lower than other face paints Oct 30, 2011

I've not purchased this product but wanted to comment due to the concern that the other review raised as my daughter LOVES face paint and I'd like to make sure if she does use it that it is safe. Safecostmetics.org lists the levels of lead and other toxins in 10 brands of face paint. This product had the lowest levels of ALL toxins with 0.082ppm lead compared with far far higher ones, especially in the Snazaroo brand. So... 1 - I can't comment on how good/bad the product is, sorry. 2 - I am sorry that the other reviewer had a very bad reaction to the product, but I would still rather direct someone to this brand others as... 3 - It shows to have extremely low levels of lead, no nickel, cobalt or chromium. 4 - I will be putting this brand on my daughters list above other brands. She hasn't had any skin reactions to Snazaroo (which I used before seeing the toxin reports) so I'll update when I know how good the product is.
