Great puzzle! Mar 27, 2007
By LA Mom My 2 year old son loves this puzzle. The pieces are easy for him to handle and the picture is very engaging. It only took him a few times to learn how to put it together himself, but he definitely does not tire of it! He loves talking about all the different parts of the fire truck, and we have made up a story about the firefighters on the truck. As with all Melissa and Doug products, it is cleverly designed and well built.
I highly recommend this puzzle for any toddler who has moved past the simplicity of traditional toddler puzzles (the ones where you put one large piece over a picture of the same thing). It's more fun for the adults too! A great gift too!

Poor design, does not fit well Jul 14, 2011
By N. Parker I love other Melissa and Doug puzzles, especially the ones with the peg but was really really disappointed with this one. The pieces don't really fit well together, they are all similarly cut so it's really difficult to put together and since they don't really lock into place but move around easily it's really hard to put the pieces together, made my boy really frustrated. It just looks very sloppily chopped into pieces. Wish I could return it....I've used it once and will now be going in a box in a closet. waste of money.

There are better fire truck puzzles out there Dec 04, 2007
By Rebecca Menes
"Gentle Reader"
My two year old loves puzzles and he loves fire trucks, but this puzzle was a disappointment.
This is not a good puzzle. There are basically two kinds of good puzzles -- puzzles where the shapes are related to the subject of the puzzle, and puzzles where the shapes are not related to the subject, but instead are designed to "lock" together. This puzzle is neither. The shapes do not lock together, neither do the relate particularly well to the pieces of the fire truck. The result is a puzzle that is difficult and frustrating for a toddler. My son could put in the wheels, the dog, and the fire hydrant -- but then he had to stop and ask me to put the rest of the puzzle together. The pieces do not give him the right clues -- Neither the picture nor the shapes of the pieces give him good insight into how to put the fire truck together.
This being said, he does love to watch me put the puzzle together, because when I am done we have a big red fire truck.
Also, and here I may be being a little over-sensitive, the figure of the African American fireman looks a little too much like a minstel-show figure in blackface. I am taking another star off for insensitive design.
If you want a good puzzle, although pitched at a slightly older crowd (3+), the Melissa and Doug "In a Box" puzzles are a good choice. My son just loves the "Melissa and Doug Deluxe Vehicles In a Box Jigsaw Puzzles" and the "Melissa and Doug In a Box Deluxe Construction In a Box Jigsaw Puzzles." These are 12-piece puzzles with pieces that "lock" together. At 27 months, my son does need some help putting them together, but when we get these pieces together he is so pleased. The pieces "lock" with a satisfying precision, progress is clear, and the design revealed by the finished puzzle is both satisfyingly detailed and really cute.
Good puzzle - something different... Jan 04, 2012
By JPS What I like about this puzzle is that it presents a new kind of challenge - different from the peg or chunky or jigsaw puzzle types. If your child enjoys puzzles, I do recommend you buy him this one, and buy it earlier than the recommended age (which I find a bit ridiculous - 3 to 6 years old?) I bought it when my son was 18 months and he loved playing with it; he learned to put it together little by little - first the easy pieces (the dog, the wheels) and then eventually (in less than a month) the whole thing - I do like toys that pose a challenge. He played with it (more like worked on it, really) many times every day for about three months, but after that it just got too easy. I find the picture a little ugly, frankly, but he didn't care... The quality of the toy is better than other Melissa and Doug toys we have, which are often pretty cheaply made - but they sell them cheap, too. :-) Here the pieces are painted on all sides instead of just having the picture glued to the top. The wood is pretty soft, so you will see some denting/damage over time, but it's pretty minor.
Fun, Cute, and Durable Jul 01, 2010
By Amanda L. Davis The pieces are all easy for little hands to grasp. They are chunky and durable. They are actually more like blocks than puzzle pieces. I would definitely recommend this and others in the line.
