Geometric Shapes and Nets Feb 11, 2007
By mathlete Excellent resources for teaching geometric solids and their nets. The plastic nets contained within each polygon fold out so that students can easily see the shapes that make up the polygon. You can purchase a set of solid transparent tiles for use with a transparency projector that compliment this set of solids. This additional set contains tiles showing the outlines of the geometric and solid colored tiles in the shape of the net. For example, the geometric solid of a hexagonal prism has a yellow plastic net folded inside the clear plastic solid. This net can be removed and unfolded. There are two tiles (in the complementary set)which coordinate with this shape - a clear tile with the outline, in yellow, of the hexagonal prism's edges, and a transparent yellow tile in the shape of the hexagonal prism net.
I found these resources a vast improvement over the Power Solids that are traditionally used in Middle School. The price is also excellent.

Great learning tool Sep 28, 2009
By Eden G. Donahou These are wonderful to use in Math classrooms. I used it in the past for Middle School Geometry and now at College level. Surface Area, Volume, even density can all be explained using these shapes. The nets are durable and students can trace them and create their own 3-D figures.

Fantastic Resource! Jan 24, 2011
By EastCoastSkiBum Essential resource for students to learn both the 2D and 3D representations of these geometric figures. Being able to remove the net from the three dimensional shape and visually see how one becomes the other, gives this product great value!
Very helpful! Like the transparent cover feature. Mar 22, 2012
By CZ My daughters are I enjoyed this learning kit. It is nice that the shapes come with the transparent cover so it helps kids relate to the shapes with dotted lines in the normal drawing.
I only wish it could come with more shapes.
Great Learning Tool, but EAI Education brand is better Mar 02, 2012
By Active Dad I teach 7-8 grade math and love these foldable geometric shapes. My students quickly grasp the concept of a "net" and how to find the surface area of a polyedron. They also are perfect for demonstrating the relationship between the volume of a prism and a pyramid with the same base area and height. I show them that scooping up 3 pyramid fulls of beads can fill up the corresponding prism, hence V = BH/3.
However, I recommend buying the EAI Education brand version instead. I've used both Learning Resources product and EAI's and found EAI's to be far superior. The plastic of EAI bends easier and fits better. And they color-coded the shapes to match up (corresponding pyramids are same color as corresponding prisms). Learning Resource colors don't have any particular logic to them. I couldn't find the EAI product on Amazon, so you'll probably have to go to their website. Search for "GeoModel EAI". I like the 10 cm size, although there are many options to choose from.
