Its usefulness would depend on the child Jan 23, 2011
By E.Me. To begin with, I believe that this pen should be included with the card sets it is intended for--or at list should be offered at a much lower price, considering that the cards themselves are pretty expensive. That being said, the educational value of the dog is dubious. It acts as described, lighting up red for wrong answers, sometimes with a "sad" sound, and green/barking for the right answer, but the child seems to be encouraged by any sound/light, and, frankly, the "sad" sound is much more fun for my 3-year-old son, so he deliberately presses the wrong answers just for fun--or selects random answers, just to hear the dog do anything. I think it would make more sense for the dog to light up/make a sound ONLY when the right answer is selected. If, however, your child is encouraged enough by "good job," etc., this may be the right choice for you. However, keep in mind the cards (which I like) will have the same educational value with or without this pen.

Cute for kids! Sep 12, 2011

First off the Hot Dots Jr. Ace Talking Teaching Dog is an adorable pen for young kids. My boys actually fight over who uses it. The pen takes 2 AAA batteries which are not included but otherwise it is ready to use. All you do is dab it on the black dot for whichever is the correct answer. It can be used on any of the Hot Dots products and there are tons of sets available from Pre-K and up. The pen also has volume control and can says encouraging phrases. His eyes also lights up red or green. The pen is quite as durable too which my boys have put it to the test!

As a teacher I love this!!!! Jun 26, 2011
By Taylor sisneros As a teacher I love anything that will make learning fun. I teach 3rd grade so I use the yellow pens in my class. I got this pen for my 4 year old niece and she loves it.

We love Hot Dots! Mar 08, 2011

I use Hot Dot cards and pens in my homeschool workboxes for my 2, 5 and 6 year olds. It's a great independant activity and they think it is fun. My 2 year old needs some help, but she loves the "blue doggie" pen and there's a huge selection of cards available. You can also buy the dots separately to make your own customized cards.

doesn't work! Mar 01, 2011
By jessie35 Unfortunately I have bought and returned two pens and they don't work! They always say it is the wrong answer, even when it is the correct answer! So frustrating. I already bought the hot dot cards, so....now I need a pen that works. I think I might try the other pen not the Ace pen, maybe that pen will work...we will see.
