LET THERE BE...dim light? Dec 22, 2011
By Armando N. Roman This is a pretty cool toy for younger kids wanting to have their own camping adventure. I was surprised by how big it was when it arrived, but even more surprised at how dim the light was. The Campfire Kids Lantern would be best for young kids who want to pretend they're camping indoors, maybe under a blanket propped up with chairs. Anyone hoping to bring this along for some real camping will be disappointed. The key feature, to me anyway, is the sounds it makes. There's a wolf howling, crickets chirping and frogs croaking. The portion of the lantern that lights up (the 'glass') even has some designs on it that you can see if it's placed near a wall. Deer, trees, a wolf and a crescent moon are all featured and look great when you can actually see them.
As many others have pointed out, the problem with this toy is that the light is provided by a single white LED bulb. But the other issue is that it requires 3 AA batteries. Maybe it's just me, but it seems like this kind of thing should use less than that. These problems aside, this toy is a steal at its current price, and a must for any parents with children who are scared of the dark. What better to have at their side when walking through the house at night than their own little lantern? Well, maybe a robot dog with flashlight eyes...but still...

An imaginative adventure awaits for those brave enough... Dec 21, 2011
By Michael This is a cool toy. It is a toy. Don't mistake it for a heavy duty lantern or light. It has a very dim light. When you turn it on, you get sounds of wildlife. Kind of neat how they do it.
If you want your kids to camp out in the back yard in a tent, or go camping (though I wouldn't think you would want this on a camping trip) or in a kid's bedroom at night for an adventure, this should fit the bill. It isn't too scary or weird, but does create an atmosphere for the imagination to thrive and be entertained. Of course, parents shouldn't be too far away since imaginations do run wild with adventuresome fantasies at times.
It's a fun toy. Not a light to guide you, just a subtle glow in the dark with some wildlife sounds to entertain or captivate the imagination.
Well done.

Keeps the Dark at Bay Nov 08, 2011
By Hedge
"All-Around Nice Guy"
My 6-year old son is, I have to admit, still a little scared of the dark. Not only does he love to play with this during the day as part of his entire camping-out campsite, he uses it almost every night as a real lantern - carrying it through the house as he brushes his teeth before bed, etc. He has lots of toys, but this one gets playtime and real-world use-time on a daily basis.

"I think little kids would love it" Nov 25, 2011

Young boys love things that make noise and they love lights. And, I was once a little boy, so I thought this would be great. However, I am no longer so little, so I handed it over to three small assistants who could put it to a proper test. (and one of them is a young lady, so we have both side's viewpoints). Here is their review in their own words:
"As typed by matthew, 9, Ben, 7, and Izzy, 5.
I think liitle kids would love it. The wolf noise is really cool, the crickets are OK,the moose noises sound like real mooeses all togerther they sound like you are in the wild.
P.S. the frog noises are annoying.
good light to read by and the base is tough. we like it"
So, I think this sounds like a ***** review. I also think my junior review staff did an excellent job.

A Winner Jan 28, 2012
By Susan K. Stewart

I saw this item in the Vine newsletter just before Christmas and thought if this is all it's cracked up to be, it'll be a winner for my grandson under the tree.
I've been familiar with the company Insect Lore since their beginning days selling bugs and science kits to homeschool families. I knew that their products were usually good quality. I wasn't disappointed.
The first plus is the lantern comes with batteries already installed. It is absolutely ready for imaginative play right out of the box.
I turned it on and the nighttime sounds are so realistic they could have been recorded in my backyard on a summer evening. The volume even ebbs and flows as natural sounds do.
Since I know this particular grandson likes a night light, the option to turn off the sound is important.
There's enough light from the single LED for the night time reader to sit under the covers and read. Much easier than holding a flashlight as I often did.
As other reviewers have pointed out, this is a toy. It's not meant nor advertised to serve as a camp lantern. As a toy that does little more than light up the blanket tent, it is great for encouraging imaginative play.
This is a winner.
