Fun, but definitely not like other Lego sets..... Dec 30, 2011

We purchased this Lego-Education set for our 8 year old son for Christmas. It is a great set, and it arrives in a large blue plastic storage bin- very handy!
There are 15+ "items" to build, from airport buildings, to airplanes, rockets, satellites, and lunar exploration vehicles. It is a nice variety.
There is something very different about this set, however, that parents need to know before purchasing: ***Not all of the assembly instructions to make every item pictured on the outside are provided! This set comes with five "inspiration cards". The inspiration cards provide the assembly instructions to construct the orange/white moon car, the red airplane, satellite, and baggage check/security station. Those are ALL the assembly instructions that come with the set.
You can download additional assembly instructions to construct the space shuttle, passenger plane, cargo plane, baggage transport vehicle/trolley, and the helicopter from the Lego-Education website. However, Lego does not provide, anywhere, the instructions for building the rocket, air traffic control tower, air terminal, lunar lander, lunar rover vehicle (blue/gray), or the crater exploration area.
I called Lego and asked about the missing instructions. They said that this set is meant to engage the creative process in the child and that the remaining items are simple enough to build that they do not require instructions.
Fine, but this can be frustrating to the child. Most kids are expecting to follow a set of instructions. Also, when trying to construct the item from just the picture alone, you run the risk of using Lego pieces needed for another item, in the item you are building, etc.
Lego should tell buyers upfront that all the instructions are not provided. It's still a great set, and lots of fun, but just keep in mind that it is different from other Lego sets.
