Gerties are great! Mar 24, 2005
By E. Pearmain Never mind the bad review from the mechanically handicapped person. It is just a rubber balloon and not very difficult to fill. The plugs and straws in the 30 or so balls I have purchased over the years have been just fine.
This is a great toy for kids because all the crying and pain associated with getting hit with a ball disappears with Gertie. I have played many tag games with them and very rarely has anyone been hurt. All ages can play great variation on games, like basketball and vollyball or just a game of "keep it up" or "crack about" they are all great fun.
You do have to remember that the softness of the rubber does weaken it and makes it prone to popping on sharp object but hey they only cost $6.99, what do you want?

Gertie Ball is fantastic! Nov 02, 2007
By K. Blackwood I am the mom of a 3 year old and a preschool teacher. My daughter has owned a gertie ball since she was 6 months old. The ball is easy to grip for small hands, easy to inflate and can withstand our labrador biting the ball. I recently bought 12 to use in the preschool. My class of 4 year olds love these balls. As a teacher, I love that they can play without fear of damaging the property or hurting another child because they are so soft! I also have 45lb. kids sitting on them like hippity-hops and they never bust. I give gertie balls as birthday gifts or shower gifts. They are wonderful!

Fun, versatile, not perfect. Sep 05, 2008

I love these balls- I had one when I was a kid, and put it on my two-year-old's wishlist last year. A relative bought it and I was thrilled. However, I couldn't stop my son from pulling the plug out with his teeth, as mentioned by another user. He also bit it several times- making a small tear one time (not all the way through the surface, and finally tearing through at a later time. I don't like the length of the plug- it protrudes far into the center of the ball, so if, for example, a kid sits on it with the plug on the bottom, the plug could jab into their leg or bottom. Also, as mentioned, the ball does not bounce as expected if it lands on the hard plug. Still a fun toy, but more suited for elementary kids than toddlers.

Great fun, but includes choking hazard Aug 29, 2011
By New Mom The ball is great and lots of fun. I bought it because it would pack flat and I was looking for toys to entertain my 10-month old in a hotel room---his grandmother was taking care of him while I was at a business conference. He had a lot of fun with this ball, but ONE major problem we encountered is that a baby with teeth can pull the plug out. My mom saw that my son had something in his mouth within a few minutes of giving him the ball and we realized he'd pulled the plug out. Scary! I will save this until he is older.

Get a pilates ball instead Jun 03, 2011
By Illinikayaker It's not that there's anything terribly wrong with the Gertie ball. It's really nice that even when inflated it has some 'give' to it, so it can easily be grasped by a toddler just learning to throw/catch. But it does need to be re-inflated more than I'd like and it should strictly be an inside ball because I don't think the material would hold up in outdoor conditions. In hindsight though, getting a pilates ball would have been better.
We got a Gertie ball for our daughter and aside from having to re-inflate it a couple of times a week we were happy with it. She liked it, it was inexpensive, we were happy. Then someone gave her a pilates ball which she likes better. It's sturdier, so she can sit on it like her own mini version of an exercise ball, it never needs re-inflation and plus side, **I** can use it for it's intended pilates purpose as well!
