 Best toy for teaching patterning Nov 18, 2007

I was researching the preK-K educational toys in the teacher's college when I found this toy kit in the library. It was a great teaching tool for sequencing and patterning. The insect counters are life-like; the kit itself is simple to use and extremely durable.
However, since it is on the pricey side as a toy, I recommend users to purchase only the counters for teaching purpose. The basic idea is to show kids a pattern, and ask kids to continue the pattern with the insect counters.

Sequencing and sorting are important skills for kids to practice, and this toy makes it fun. The bright colors and handy carrying case make it appealing and portable. What kid can resist multicolored critters?
If you have the money, this is a good tool. If you can't shell out that much dough or if you just think your head might explode when you realize that the little plastic pieces you paid so much for are scattered all over the house, you can recreate the concept for little or nothing with a bag of twelve bean soup. I really like this set as it does as advertised, teaches patterns and sequencing. It is really nice to use with more than one child. However, for the price I would have liked to see a larger variety of activities in the guide book. There could have easily been some simple addition/subtraction activities in the book as well as these types of activities naturally grow out of learning patterns and sequences. Of course we made our own simple problems, but I should not have needed to for the price we paid for this set. Also, once you take everything out of the tackle box is it really hard to get them all back in.
Overall, I would buy it again under the following conditions:
1. More than one child just starting to learn to recognize patterns
2. Readily being able to come up with adaptations for the activities in the book - once a toddler/preschooler does the card once or twice they really "have it" and don't need to keep doing the same exercise over and over again.

I got this as an educational toy, but my kids play with it even when we're not sequencing. This is one of the best purchases I've made. My 2-year-old and 4-year-old can sequence at different levels.

I am so disgusted and disappointed by this toy. Although the premise is fantastic.
Backstory...My toddler becomes bored with toys that are simplistic and shows greater capability for pattern making so I was SO EXCITED to find this toy. Expensive?! Who cares! I bought it without thinking twice. It is so hard to find toys for intelligent babies these days and especially little girls when all the market seems to want to push are 'happy ever after' disney princess toys that require no thought whatsoever to operate. So Kudos to Kaplan learning center! I applaud you for your efforts. But I have been frusterated by this toy and I feel the need to give you this honest review so here goes.
My little girl is the typical toddler, energetic and rough and tumble. I expected the plastic parts of this toy to last longer. They did not. Within a week of her playing with this and carrying it around everywhere and sequencing her little bugs endlessly the first part broke on us. It was the handle on the blue tray that can be positioned upwards, one of the little brackets that helps seat it inside the actual tray disappeared. This made the handle useless and because it only attached to one side of the tray. No biggie. I took it out and although operation of the toy was clumsy (my daughter could no longer carry the toy around with her) she could still open the box, put everything inside, take it out, put the tray in, take that out, count everything and of course sequence and pattern with the book.
Then within several more days the hinges on the box broke. So my daughter can no longer carry this toy around with her. The box is useless except for storage but with her refined motor skills still in development she is not able to positon the tray just right so that the box will close without unseating the lid again and becomes frusterated. I encourage toy clean up after play and indeede this is even part of our learning proces and play so that for a while she avoided the toy because she could not properly clean up after herself (and then feel proud and gain confidence).
The direct result has been that I have taken the case away. I put the the little bugs and frogs in a basket with the tray and a book. I mostly just hope that the toy will not break further. It is unfortunate that the toy has turned out to be so fragile. It cannot be stored like a tackle box or carried around as intended.
Kaplan, please keep in mind that when you create a toy for children it needs to be DURABLE. If any of the parts are too fragile to withstand play the toy will lose its appeal. If using a stronger plastic on the case and tray is not possible I recommend that the price for this toy be cut in half (or less) to reflect its fragility.
